“I’ve Got This Plant …” — Answers to Common Gardening Questions by Ann Welles
Like every gardener I’ve ever met, I’ve made too many mistakes to count and have encountered obstacles that have made me want to chuck gardening entirely. And this has made me a firm believer that concise information and a dash of experience are the secret ingredients of success for every gardener, novice and expert alike. I’m constantly astounded and enlightened by the questions our customers have and do my best to act as a reference desk where they can find the information they need to be successful. I’ll share seasonal tips and observations as well as field your questions about gardening in our part of the country.
Melissa Oothout, Houseplants and Annuals Supervisor
Melissa Oothout has been excited about growing anything and everything that sprouts, roots, vines, fruits and flowers ever since she can remember.
Before entering the nursery business, Melissa worked as the farm manager for Wollam Gardens, a specialty cut flower farm in northern Virginia, before joining Lexington Gardens in 1996 as their Greenhouse Manager. Melissa worked at Lexington Gardens for 12 years before they closed their doors in 2008.
While working at Lexington Gardens, Melissa started her own business as a cut flower grower, selling to farmers’ markets in the Boston-area, providing wedding flowers and custom floral arrangements, and creating container gardens for homes and businesses in Boston, Cambridge, and Arlington.
In 2008 Melissa joined the team at Weston Nurseries where she is currently the Annuals Supervisor. Her specialties include houseplants, growing vegetables annuals and container gardening.
“Once upon a time, when I was co-ordinator of horticulture and education at MassHort, I used to write articles for Horticulture Magazine in their ‘Leaflet’ section called “Thoughts from a Master Gardener.” The pieces I’ve written for our Weston Nurseries newsletter have been similar in feel – a personalized account of things happening in and around the garden. I plan to write the same sort of piece here, hoping to open discussion among gardeners or aspiring gardeners. I look forward to our discussions.
I actually know what I’m saying at least some of the time: I’m proud to be an MCH and a principal Master Gardener, and I volunteer in season at Garden in the Woods pruning and weeding, and at the Arnold Arborteum on their plant info hotline.
By the way, the young gentleman sitting in my garden in the picture above is my grandson Charlie, a great garden helper, especially when it comes to harvesting cherry tomatoes.”
This is where other members of the Weston Nurseries staff will post updates about products or happenings at the Nursery that we think you will find interesting. Here, our hard goods buyer may give you a sneak preview of new, exciting product coming in, or our customer care staff may give you an inside view of events going on at the Garden Center. Or perhaps one of us will talk about plants that have caught our eye in our daily walks around the grounds.
We want to have some fun with this blog – we hope you enjoy it, too!
