We eat salads all summer long. Lettuce is not only the vehicle for our juicy tomatoes, crunchy cucumbers, sweet carrots and radishes. It, in and of itself, is so tasty when picked fresh.
People think of lettuce as a cool weather crop, but it can be grown all summer. You can have a steady supply of medium to full size heads of lettuce even in the hottest months.
Plant seeds weekly, with no more than seven days between sowings.
Recommended seeds for mid-season varieties include, Green Leaf, Green Star, Red Leaf, Romaine and Butter Head.
When your lettuce is ready, harvest early in the morning or late in the evening. Plunge the lettuce heads into a bucket of cold water, This will rinse soil from the heads and also will begin the cooling process. Lettuce should be refrigerated and consumed as soon as possible to keep it’s fresh crunch.
Don’t be shy about seeding your own veggies. Lettuce is easy to grow and delicious to eat.
